Never Too Early To Start Planning
Every upland season comes down to one date — and in the heat of the summer, opening day always feels further off than it really is. This tool does the counting for you. Pick your state, pick your bird, and watch the clock tick down to the opener, right to the second. We've loaded season openers for pheasant, ruffed and sharp-tailed grouse, prairie chicken, bobwhite and western quail, chukar, Hungarian partridge, woodcock, and dove across all 48 lower states. Seasons get reset every year and vary by zone — and sometimes between resident and non-resident hunters — so use this as your planning anchor, then confirm the fine print with your state agency before you head afield.
How it works
Choose your state from the first dropdown, then choose your bird. The countdown updates instantly with the days, hours, minutes, and seconds left until that opener. Found your date? Share it with your hunting party, or jump straight to the gear you'll be living in once the season's in.
Game bird season FAQ
When does game bird season open in 2026?
It depends on the state and the species. Out West, forest grouse can open as early as late August. Mourning dove opens September 1 across much of the country. Grouse and partridge follow through September, pheasant generally lands in October or November, and quail often opens latest of all. Pick your state and bird above for the exact 2026 opener and a live countdown to it.
What's the earliest upland bird opener of the year?
For most hunters it's mourning dove on September 1. In parts of the West, forest grouse — ruffed, dusky, and spruce — can open in late August, and chukar and Hungarian partridge usually follow in mid-September.
Do hunting season dates change every year?
Yes. States set their seasons annually, and the dates can shift by a week or more from one year to the next. Many also vary by zone within a state, and a few give residents an earlier opener than non-residents. That's why every countdown here comes with the same reminder: confirm with your state wildlife agency before you hunt.
Which game birds does the countdown cover?
Pheasant, ruffed grouse, sharp-tailed grouse, prairie chicken, bobwhite quail, scaled, Gambel's, valley and mountain quail, chukar, Hungarian (gray) partridge, woodcock, and mourning dove — wherever each one is in season across the lower 48.
Are these the official season dates?
We build the dates from state agency regulations and keep the marquee states current, but seasons can change after we update and zone-specific rules vary. Treat this as a planning guide, not a replacement for the official regulations — always verify with your state agency before opening morning.
